application/pdfFAQ internship(PDF | 4 MB)

Internships provide a means of training and orientation and are encouraged by the University as an important opportunity to connect with the world of work.
An internship does not constitute an employment relationship as such, but nonetheless the procedures involved in undertaking an internship, established by law to protect both interns and companies, must be respected.
Internships always involve three actors: the host company/institution (the company, body, association, etc.) , the intern (UniTrento students or graduates) and the promoter.
The University of Trento has the role of promoting internships for its students and recent graduates (those who have graduated within the last 12 months).

There are other types of internship, where the promoter may be a Job Centre (summer internships, work placements or back to work schemes: for information about these types of internships, you can contact  the Trento Employment Agency directly, or your nearest Job Centre.

Choosing your internship

Internship opportunities are displayed in the Selection calls, Internship and Jobs section.
However, if you would like to arrange an guidance interview to define your internship plan in more detail, you can contact the office to book an appointment. If you wish to prepare you application in the best way, you can follow our courses (Cv, cover letter etc).

Starting an internship in Italy

Students

You start the internship using the Esse3 Internships and Jobs platform.

Starting the internship

  • The Host Organization
    • fills in the fields arranged within the Esse3 Internships and Jobs platform for the insertion of the proposal for a training project (description of the activities to be carried out, modalities, objectives..);
  • The Student
    • finds a University supervisor;
    • accepts  the proposal for a training project inserted by the Host Organization in Esse3 Internships and Jobs platform;
  • The Student
    • downloads the proposal of a training project  from Esse3 and shares it with the University tutor (and/or, where required, the Internship Delegate);
  • The University supervisor (and/or, where required, the Internship Delegate):
    • assesses the validity of the proposal and the activity entailed, sends an email to Job Guidance Office for its approval of the training project, together with any amendments;
  • Job Guidance:
    • enables the student to download the final version of the trainig project;
  • The Student:
    • prints the final version of the training project and signs it. Once signed, submit the document for signature to the the Host Organization Tutor and lastly to the University Tutor.
      It is then necessary to send the training project, complete with signatures, by email to: jobguidance@unitn.it. The sending (hopefully within 10 days of the commencement of the internship) can be done by the student or by the University Tutor (last signatory). In any case, it is the student responsibility to provide the Host Organization with the complete document.

During the internship

It is recommended to download from the beginning the "Certificate Part I" from the Esse3 Internships and Jobs platform, in order to regularly mark the days /hours spent in the internship activities. Both the Host Organization and the Student may contact the Office for a meeting, should problems arise. In cases of extension, interruption or suspension, an email communication must be sent to the Job Guidance Office, with a copy to the University supervisor and the Host Organization supervisor, setting out the request, the relevant dates and the reasons for the request. It is recommended to verify the need for further authorizations in the event of changes, carefully reading the web pages of your Department/Cds dedicated to external internships.

At the end of the internship

  • The company supervisor fills in the online evaluation survey form sent by email from University and hopefully share it with the student. The company supervisor also completes and signs the Certificate Part 1, already completed and signed by the student, assuring in this way the total amount of hours of internship effectively done.
  • The Student fills in the online Trainee's self-evaluation form, and before sending it, downloads a copy of it.
  • The Student finally sends, only through the dedicated apply, the Certificate part I and the Final internship report

More details on the page dedicated to the closure of the internship , section: "Ending the internship-students"

Some important information:

  • The minimum time required to start an internship is 15 days. Agreement with "Aziende sanitarie" can take a very long time and is not guaranteed.
  • It is important to know and respect your own Department’s regulations both with regard to credit-bearing internships as well as those which do not have credits attached (where they can be undertaken). The procedure involving the Delegate for Internships, where required, is a pre-requisite for starting the internship in the first place and for later recognition of the completed internship.
  • The length of the internship is subject to the regulations of the student’s own department and these are therefore binding.
  • To start an internship, the student must be in compliance with the payment of tuition fees.
  • For curricular internships, accident insurance cover and Third Party insurance will be paid for by UniTrento.
  • To alter the plan for the internship, or suspend, interrupt, extend or terminate it, follow the instructions at this link.

Course on Health and Safety in the workplace

Safety at Work training is mandatory by law and must be provided by employer (host company/institution). However, the University of Trento provides for all those involved in internships the possibility to attend, online, the Course on Health and Safety in the workplace - workers' general training.
If needed, those who are interested can also ask to attend the course on Health and Safety in the workplace - workers' specific risk training (low risk for office activities).

How to start an internship abroad

University contacts to reach out to initiate internships outside Italy are the International Mobility Offices, which manage these opportunities through active calls. Exceptions include the following cases, which are handled directly by the Job Guidance Office: fully remote internships, MAECI-CRUI calls, EIT students, EMBS students, LCT Erasmus Mundus students, incoming double degree programs students, first- and second-level master's degrees students, graduates).
If requirements for the active calls are missing, the Mobility Office will forward the request to the Job Guidance Office. Activation through the Job Guidance Office does not include any financial support. In order to complete the procedure, the collaboration of all involved parties is required and the entire procedure can take up to 60 days.

Activation Procedure
The internship is activated through the Esse3 Internship and Job Platform.
As a mandatory preliminary step, a company representative must register the company data in Esse3, upload a copy of his/her passport, wait for account activation.
Once the account has been activated, the company representative must enter the contents of the Training Agreement and Orientation Project. Please note that the internship start date proposed by the system will be set no earlier than 45 days from submission.
The Training Agreement and Orientation Project must be signed by the company using a handwritten or qualified electronic signature (a list of eIDAS-accredited providers is available by country). Other signing methods are not possible.
The internship may only begin after the Training Agreement and Orientation Project has been completed and signed by the intern, the company supervisor and the university supervisor, and countersigned by our office. Consequently, you will be required to await our final authorization email.

Insurance and Health Coverage
Accident (not illness) and third-party liability insurances, provided by UniTrento, are valid abroad (policies available here). However, it is the intern's responsibility to ensure with the host organization that the coverage limits comply with local regulations. If not, private insurance must be purchased.
For health coverage, if the internship takes place in an EU country, the national health coverage is valid in other EU states as well. For non-EU countries, interns are required to take out private health insurance.

Graduates

Post-graduate internships abroad can be activated within 12 months after graduation and must comply with the regulations of the host country. Additionally, the role of a recent graduate intern is not always recognized abroad and may involve costs for the host organization, which can discourage this type of experience.
Once the host organisation has been identified, it is the responsibility of the trainee to promptly send us the Training Agreement template required by the legislation of the host country.
